Variety: 60% Viura, 10% Calagraño, and a variety of other indigenous vines
Kalamity Blanco, a distinguished white wine produced by OXER Wines, is a blend composed of 60% Viura, 10% Calagraño, and a variety of other indigenous vines. The grapes are sourced from exceptionally old vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, some dating back to 1920. These vineyards are situated at elevations of approximately 600 meters and thrive in clay-calcareous soils, yielding around 3,000 kg per hectare.
Viticulture and Harvesting
The vineyards are managed organically, adhering to regenerative agricultural practices to maintain environmental sustainability. The grapes are harvested manually to ensure only the best quality fruit is selected.
Vinification Process
1. Pressing:
- Whole bunches are directly pressed to extract the juice.
- The process incorporates hyperoxidation to stabilize phenolic compounds and enhance the wine's longevity.
2. Fermentation:
- Alcoholic fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks.
- After the initial fermentation, the wine is transferred to used 600L French oak barrels to complete fermentation, including malolactic fermentation.
3. Aging:
- The wine ages in these barrels for 10 months. This period allows the wine to develop complexity without imparting excessive oak flavors, as only used barrels are employed.
Terroir and Locations
The vineyards are located in several notable areas within the Rioja region:
- Rioja Alavesa: Elvillar, Leza, Navaridas, and Laguardia
- Rioja Alta: Cárdenas and San Vicente de la Sonsierra
Winemaking Philosophy
OXER Wines focuses on minimal intervention in the winery to let the terroir's characteristics shine through. Their approach includes:
- Using French oak (always used), Austrian foudres, Padilla clay jars, and concrete eggs for vinification.
- Avoiding excessive extraction to maintain the wine’s natural freshness and elegance.
Wine Characteristics
Kalamity is celebrated for its balance of freshness and elegance. The careful vinification process ensures that the wine retains its fruitiness without becoming overly oaky or "maderized." The end result is a wine that reflects its terroir with purity and has earned significant acclaim from critics and wine enthusiasts alike.
